Humane Society Of New York
Award-Winning Welfare Charity
For almost 120 years, the Humane Society of New York (HSNY) has advocated for the health and wellbeing of cats, dogs, and other animals. The Society first came together as a private organization with the goal of stopping the abuse of horses in New York City, but it soon blossomed into a nonprofit that catered to the needs of the city’s sick, injured, and homeless pets. The Humane Society of New York continues this tradition today by operating a veterinary clinic that serves people whose finances are limited and an adoption center in the heart of Manhattan.
The Society’s Vladimir Horowitz and Wanda Toscanini Horowitz Adoption Center takes in homeless pets, many which require extensive medical care and seniors with special needs and provides each one with personalized attention as they await adoption. HSNY strives to meet each pet’s unique needs. Canine residents of the adoption center undergo additional evaluations to determine what type of training they require before going to their forever homes.
Every year, HSNY helps provide a better quality of life to thousands of cats and dogs.

HSNY Veterinary Clinic
HSNY is also renowned for its veterinary clinic, which is available to all cat and dog owners and is open for appointments seven days a week. For many of these animals and their owners, HSNY is the only source of veterinary care they have. As such, HSNY offers low-cost services to ensure that every pet receives the care they require, whether it’s a simple wellness exam, inoculations, surgery, or dentistry. The Society also facilitates the Willis Fund Spay/Neuter Program and Outdoor Cat Spay/Neuter Program to increase access to these important services.
HSNY is a four-star-rated nonprofit on Charity Navigator. HSNY has also received the prestigious America’s Best Charities Seal of Excellence, which recognizes nonprofits that meet certain standards related to finances, accountability, and programming.
