ASPCA in NYC

Committed to Confronting Animal Cruelty

From its headquarters in New York City, ASPCA pursues its foundational belief that animals deserve to be treated with kindness and respect by supporting measures across the country aimed at preventing animal cruelty. Among the largest humane societies in the world, it operates thanks to the efforts of more than 2 million US-based supporters. ASPCA keeps an especially high profile in NYC, where it maintains myriad facilities and services for pet owners and their furry best friends.

ASPCA traces its history to 1866, when a recently resigned American diplomat named Henry Bergh established the organization in NYC. Bergh had left his diplomatic post after stopping a carriage driver from assaulting a horse while he was on assignment in Russia. The society’s official seal, which depicts this event, albeit with an angel of mercy taking the place of Bergh, reflects the commitment and inspiration the organization continues to carry today.

Bergh guided the society to many landmark animal-welfare achievements over his tenure. Today, the organization confronts the full scope of animal abuse by applying its expertise in the areas of protection, rescue, and placement.

In NYC alone, ASPCA maintains adoption centers, veterinary hospitals, and spay/neuter clinics set aside for both animal rescuers and members of the general pet-owning public. Recognizing the vital role of veterinarians in ensuring animal welfare, ASPCA in NYC also offers externships programs for veterinary students in their third or fourth year of study.

The society relies on the generosity of volunteers to continue its life-saving work. Volunteers with ASPCA in NYC provide range of support in the organization’s shelters. The society also welcomes volunteers who are willing to serve as foster pet caregivers.

All potential volunteers and caregivers must live in or near NYC. For people outside of the region who still want to help, ASPCA in NYC encourages these animal lovers to make a one-time financial donation or become a sustaining monthly member.
